Brick inscriptions refer to the words that are drawn,carved or written on bricks.The predecessors did not fully understand the value of brick inscriptions.However,as a reliable unearthed real text,brick inscriptions have important research values in many aspects.This paper selecting this material which has relatively few research results,taking brick inscriptions before the Eastern Jin Dynasty as the research object,and carrying out the research on collation and related issues.Contents include:First of all,collect materials comprehensively and establish the database.The article complemented 103 pieces of the brick inscriptions which are previously but scatteredly published in journals,magazines and newspapers in recent years(2005-2019).It sorts out the bibliography and research status,so that readers can form a more complete understanding from different dimensions.Next,I put forward my own views on the ten deliberate interpretations.The article putting forward that Hu haifan's interpretation of"?????"should be"?????".He interpreted the brick description "(?)" as "?",which should be changed as "(?)",and demonstrating the reason why"???"might be fake carvings.The article thinks it is more reasonable to explain the tomb brick text of Xu Wen as"??",although Liu Mingjin believed that it should be"??".Then,from the perspective of text content,this paper divides the materials into eight categories:register brick,date brick,mark brick,auspicious language brick,record brick,record tomb epitaph brick,ground certificate brick,essay brick.It investigates the characteristics,using scopes,and elements of each category.In addition,the specific classification of each brick inscription is presented in the form of an appendix.The article focuses on the register brick which put the official signature before the name of the person.The earliest example of the use of Ji Nian Gan Zhi(????),which was found by Gu fengxin in the Eastern Han Dynasty.This paper proves that it should be advanced to the Western Han Dynasty.It also focuses on the discrimination of the reign title.Not only explores the folk customs of the Han Dynasty embodied in auspicious language brick,but also discusses the reasons why auspicious language brick are so decorative.Finally,this paper analyzes the brick inscriptions before the Eastern Jin Dynasty from the perspectives of common characters,simplified characters,phonetic loan characters and some characteristic characters.The common characters can be divided into three categories: common characters made by adding or subtracting strokes,common characters made by subtracting or transforming parts,and other common characters.It uses a table to list all the common words,which are also including simplified characters,phonetic loan characters.The article finds that the early appearance of the character “(?) ” in the Eastern Han Dynasty is very close to the simplified character "Lin"(?).The paper illustrates some characteristic phenomena in brick inscriptions,such as reverse writing,mixed positive writing and reverse writing,and common stroke of adjacent characters.Previously,studies on brick inscriptions are scattered.This paper systematically investigates and analyzes these materials of brick inscriptions before the Eastern Jin Dynasty.It also combines comprehensive expansion of the overall appearance and discussion of special issues.So it has a positive effect on promoting the research of brick inscriptions.
