The Effort Of Father's Parenting Style On The Impact Of Early Inhibition On Social Withdrawal Behavior

This research aimed to examine the relationship among social withdrawal,behavior inhibition,and father's parenting style,and tried to build a specific path model of early behavioral inhibition,social withdrawal behavior and parental rearing patterns based on Developmental Contextualism.Three hundred and fifty-four children with their fathers,in the city of Nanjing,Jiangsu province,were followed up.Children and parents were invited to participate in our study when these children were 2,4 and 7 years old,respectively.Fathers reported on The Child-Rearing Practices Report Q Sort at all three stages,which was used to examine 'and the fathers' parenting style.Children's behavioral inhibition was coded based on children's behavioral reactions during free play sessions and stranger sessions when they were 2 years old.Moreover,children's social withdrawal during free play sessions at age 4 and 7 was coded according to the Play Observation Scale.The results of this research demonstrated that:(1)There are significant gender differences in children's solitary-active behavior at the age of 4 and 7 years: Boys show more solitary-active behavior than girls;(2)From 4 to 7 years old,there is moderate stability in children's reticent behavior and solitary-active behavior;(3)Fathers' encouragement of independence when children were 2 years old significantly positively predicts children's reticent behavior when they were 4 years old;Fathers' encouragement of socialism and acceptance when children were 4 years old significantly predicts children's reticent behavior when they were 4 years old;Fathers' refusal when children were 7 years old significantly predicts children's solitary-active behavior when they were 4 years old.(4)Different parental rearing styles have different effects on inhibited children effecting children's social withdrawal behavior: When the father showed higher encouragement of socialism When children are 2 years of age,inhibited children were more likely to develop anxiety withdrawal behavior at the age of 4;when the father showed lower refusal and punishment When children are 2 years of age,inhibited children are more likely to develop reticent behavior at the age of 4;when the father shows lower acceptance When children are 4 years of age,inhibited children are more likely to develop solitary-active behavior at the age of 4.
