Anger And Compromise:Deal With The Missionary Case After The Boxer Movement In Shanxi Province

During the Boxer Movement of Shanxi province in 1900,the Christianism suffered a huge hit.Many priests and believers were killed,and many church buildings and properties were destroyed.This missionary case shocked the world.This paper takes dealing with the missionary case after the boxer movement in Shanxi province as the theme.Besides the introduction and conclusion,it is discussed in five chapters.The first chapter introduces the rise of Shanxi Boxer Movement and the persecution of the Christianism by Shanxi Boxer.Chapter two mainly introduces some work done by Xiliang when he was the governor in Shanxi province,such as protecting priests and believers,relieving believers,setting up Shanxi Westernization Bureau.Then it analyses the reasons why Cen Chunxuan succeeded Xiliang as the governor of Shanxi Province.Chapter three points out that some priests and believers behaved badly and vent their anger revenge.The fourth chapter firstly introduces Cen Chunxuan’s work in dealing with the missionary case when he was the governor in Shanxi province,which includes lending money to the church,investigating the missionary case in the whole province,punishing the Christianism haters,burying the dead priests and believers.Finally,after a series of negotiations,Shanxi has signed the agreements with the Protestantism and the Catholicism to compensate the injured churches and believes.The fifth chapter considers that the panic caused by the spread of various rumors of the church poisoning the Chinese people and Yuxian’s hatred policy are the main reasons for the outbreak of Shanxi Boxer Movement.In addition,some dereliction of duty of Shanxi government in the dealing with the missionary case further turn the believer’s identity to the church,and weakened the government’s right to administer the believers.After a long period of negotiation,the missionary case in Shanxi province was finally concluded.The process of dealing with the missionary case tested the diplomatic ability of Shanxi government,and provoked the thinking of the reconciliation between people and Christianism by both Domestic and foreign.
