Toward The Application Of The Mode Of Communicative Translation:Some Techniques Applied In E-C Translation Of On Rumors(Excerpt)

The present author chooses On Rumors as the SL text for two reasons.Firstly,the theme of this sociological work is appealing to the potential reader.Secondly,it provides constructive advice to deal with rumors and their potential damages,benefiting human societies of variant cultures.To fulfill the informative and vocative function of the SL text,the present author argues that the mode of communicative translation is applicable to the E-C translation of On Rumors and similar sociological works.Through a detailed discussion,she holds that communicative translation and semantic translation have developed from sense-for-sense translation and word-for-word translation respectively.Summarizing the author's experience in translating On Rumors,the author also finds that three reader-oriented techniques,namely,addition,negation and the use of four-character phrases,are exceptionally helpful to reach a highly readable TL text.
