| Football is the world's most popular sport today.China boasts the largest number of football fans in the world,and the people who love football are eager to know the matches and related news in the top flight.Therefore,the translation of mainstream football news is becoming more and more important.Moreover,China has made the development of football into a national policy.Thus,understand the current situation of international football,master basic football knowledge and learn advanced football concepts have a practical significance.In view of such a background,the translator decides to translate articles in the Premier League,a section on football on BBC News which is favored by football fans all around the world.An article in Premier League averages out about 1000 words,and the translator completes the translation of 94 articles from April to December in 2008,a total of 100,000 words.Based on the E-C translation practice of articles on BBC News,this translation report makes an analysis of contents and characteristics of the source text in detail.The translation practice is conducted by the method of communicative translation within the framework of text function theory proposed by Peter Newmark.Communicative translation is entirely oriented towards the target language readers.Thus,in order to make the effect of the translated version on Chinese readers the same as that of the original news on the readers of the source language,this translation practice adopts flexible translation strategies in terms of vocabulary,syntax and text according to the culture and language expression habits of Chinese.In lexical level,the translator deals with the football players' names,nicknames,abbreviations and terms by the accepted conventional way,literal translation and free translation;insyntactic level,the translator selects methods of recasting,inversion,splitting-off and cutting-off to guide the translation;and in textual level,the translator mainly repeats and elaborates on the key words to create discourse coherence.In this translation report,the translator uses examples and analysis to show the guidance of communicative translation for this translation practice.In addition,the translator hopes to improve her translation ability through translating the articles in Premier League on BBC News,and provide some references for translators who engage in the translation of football news in the future. |
