The core competencies of English discipline divide into four aspects: language ability,cultural character,thinking quality and learning ability.In recent years,cultural character competence has become the focus of current research in the education field,with giving priority to the studies of the cultivation of students' cultural character and the infiltration of the competence in the classroom teaching,while those researches have seldom taken English teachers as the subject of investigation.In the context of the quality-oriented education,however,the philosophies----the main body of students and the leading role of the teacher as well as people-orientation embody that English teachers play a remarkable role in teaching.Meanwhile,the quality-oriented education requires teachers to have favourable cultural character competence and ability of cultural instruction so as to better cultivate students' competence in teaching and have a far-reaching influence on their comprehensive development.Based on the theory of the core competencies of English subject and lifelong education theory,the present paper takes teachers as the research subject.Through questionnaire(4 dimensions in total: humanistic literacy,cultural awareness,behavioral orientation and cultural teaching),classroom observation and interview,the paper aims at investigating the current situation of cultural character competence of English teachers in the senior high school with the aid of SPSS 23.0.And then it analyzes on the main factors that are influencing the current situation,so as to propose some feasible suggestions to improve English teachers' capability and enable them to better serve their English teaching.Hence,the paper is supposed to explore the following three major research questions:(1)What is the status quo of the cultural character competence of English teachers in senior high school in Guilin?(2)What are the main factors influencing the current situation?(3)How to improve English teachers' cultural character competence?The results have shown that:(1)the cultural character competence of senior high school English teachers in Guilin is in good condition overall,with a mean score of 3.355.Nevertheless,there still exist deficiencies in some dimensions which need to be further improved.Such as the intercultural consciousness(M=3.085)under the dimension of cultural awareness and the cultivation of cultural consciousness(M=3.105)in the cultural teaching dimension,their mean scores both are around 3.00,only in a medium level.English teachers fail to do well in the training of cultural ability(M=2.985)under the cultural teaching,with the mean score below 3.00,which shows that they focus more on the introduction and comparison of culture,while relatively neglect the cultivation of cultural awareness and the training of cultural ability.(2)the main impacting factors include external factors such as the impact of college entrance examination,teaching pressure,teaching environment,learning resources,etc.and internal reasons like education background,teaching experience,personal consciousness,lack of time and abilities,etc.At the end of the paper,the author has put forward some related suggestions on how to improve high-school English teachers' cultural character competence according to the results.(1)The training model of English teachers needs reforming,from traditional model to focusing on the development of English teachers' cultural character competence.(2)English teachers are supposed to transform their teaching philosophy,which requires them to give priority to the combination of instrumental and humanistic features of English subject,rather than the educational philosophy with utilitarian.(3)English teachers' learning channels need to be extended,and the educational departments and schools should offer English teachers more opportunities for relative cultural teaching training and further study abroad.(4)English teachers,equipping with lifelong learning idea,are expected to enhance their reflection ability and cultural awareness,in order to improve their cultural character competence and ability of cultural teaching during reflection.
