Buddhism was introduced into China from the Eastern Han Dynasty and gradually integrated into the secular life of this land.During the process,it not only offered a place to believers who can rely on and relieve their thoughts.But also actively joined in the charity rescue of the public.Under the influence Of Buddhist thoughts,some Buddhist institutions spontaneously completed a variety of sporadic,isolated but effective charitable cases.After that,the state of ancient China asked for the Buddhist institutions to do the socil charity relief tasks,as a supplement to the Confucian ethic system: the Ren based on blood relationships,and then the Buddhist rescue charity,Beitian courtyard,has gradually formed.And this is the point that this article pays attention to: What is the practice of the Buddism mercy charity that manifested as the Beitian courtyard,under the influence of Buddist thoughts in the Tang and Song Dynasties.What's more,in a society bound by Confucian ethics,how does Buddhism's so-called ethics of "all living beings are equals" play its role in settling people's minds in the secular life?In summary,this paper focuses on the following aspects: Firstly,this paper combs the theoretical source of the practice of "Beitian courtyard" in Buddhist teachings and the social roots.Secondly,this paper summarizes the social functions,related practices and operational mechanisms of the Beitian courtyard.Thirdly,on the basis of historical facts,this paper studies the operation of Buddhist charity in the traditional Confucian ethical society in the Tang and Song Dynasties,and the social influence brought by the practice of the Beitian thought.Finally,this thesis Attempts to summarize some arguments that are beneficial to the development of philanthropyfrom the previous analysis of the Buddhism charity practices.Hope this paper will contribute to the development of current philanthropy.
