1960s and 1970 s are when social contractions are the most protruding in the US.After that the US entered a “modern era” wholly which has no thrilling world wars but has made the US society undergo turbulence.From a point of view of history,this era shows us that young US speeded up in going forward after wars.Deteriorating of China and Soviet Union from 1960 s,upgrading of Vietnam War,32 countries’ getting rid of colonial rule,African national liberation movement,the Europe’s building Berlin Wall,etc.have all influenced the US in social,political and cultural aspects.However,in this era,the US society changed overall: challenges faced by three presidents,social entanglements of whether liberation or indulgence,the “new left” trend of thoughts,feminism movements,the black’s civil right movement,campus rebelling,the anti-war activity,the anti-traditionalism,hippie movement,Lunar Probe Project of the US,pop art renaissance......Nearly in those 20 years,the US society has been on the wheel of “modern era” of social progress.In the aspect of music,we can see that US pop music had more or less participated in those social movements.From a point of view of pop music history,we can discover specifically that many pop music’s content is related to the US politics,economy,society and culture,which are even important roles in the music.Pop music thing-in-itself are closely related to social culture.From the US ideology to culture utterances,from politics color to clan problems,from gender discrimination to teenage problems,pop music has been integrating with culture.No matter what the angle is to see pop music or to see culture,there must be established functionality.In this thesis,the US social and music forms in the 1960 s and 1970 s have been analyzed and researched from a point of view of history,and pop music’s property of participation and functionality have been analyzed in the progress of the then main social contradictions.This thesis’ researching aim is that view of researching pop music shall not simply linger on the music thing-in-itself and work analysis,because any art’s birth is closely related to its specific era.Thus,Theodor Wiesengrund Adorno’s angle for pop music and “negative dialectics” have been adopted for deeply researching pop music’s essence and its aesthetic characters.Pop music’s essence and the real world’s negativity have been recognized,so pop music’s art form and its being away from the real world and the negative relation theory have been contrasted to social movements in the US in 1960 s and 1970 s.Rock music,jazz music and the US anti-war songs have been done a interdisciplinary research in history,sociology and politics,so the social existing of pop music has been analyzed mentally.
