This thesis is an E-C translation report on the fifth chapter of A Crooked Line: From Cultural History to the History of Society. The task is entrusted by a publishing house. As an academic text, the source text possesses features of academic works. It deserves in-depth research. The thesis performs concrete analysis and case study based on the E-C translation of this chapter and emphasizes on the discussion of some translation methods and techniques on the lexical, syntactical and textual levels. This translation report is composed of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the background, related studies on translation of academic works and general principles of academic translation. The second chapter analyzes the source text and describes the tools and parallel texts prepared before translating. The third chapter is case study.Based on the source text's features, the author analyzes problems and solutions from lexical, syntactical and textual levels in details. The forth chapter introduces the post-translation process, including proofreading and editing. The fifth chapter sums up the whole translation process, including experience and lessons learned from translating. It is concluded that, the translation of academic works can make full use of related translation methods and techniques on lexical, syntactic and textual levels. On the lexical level, there are many terms and names of historical events. Some of terms are abstruse which require the translator to add annotations accordingly;on the syntactical level, the source text contains many long and complex sentences which can be divided or reorganized;on the textual level, being logical and coherent is the emphasis.Attention needs be paid to the coherence of the paragraphs as well as the text structure.By virtue of the case study, the author explores the general principles and methods of translating academic works, and thus hopes that this translation report can provide some practical value for the translation of academic works.
