A semimonthly named The Pillar started publication in Shanghai on September15th,1936,which was edited by Li Liewen.The periodical held together a large number of progressive writers of literature and art,in which a lot of literary and artistic works with both ideological and artistic qualities were published.These works were characterized by distinctive marks of times.The Pillar carried a wide range of contents as well as literary style of diversities:literary criticism,prose,novel,news report,poetry,essays,reportage,drama,and translation of works.Being a periodical with great influence on the eve of anti-Japanese war,it has important literary value and historical value.This selected topic runs a survey of the semimonthly of The Pillar as a whole,explores the literature history significance of the journal from a macroscopic,comprehensive and systematic perspective,so that the development context of literature in this period is grasped more thoroughly and more meticulously.Chapter One introduces the basic facts of The Pillar.Based on the times background to start publication of The Pillar,its struggle consciousness that rose since its first release under a rigorous censorship system is analyzed.Meanwhile,the origin and reason to run the journal,and its editorial policy are discussed with detailed historical data.And the originality of the journal is summed up.Based upon the text of the periodical,Chapter Two dissects writers'works from the two perspectives of‘salvation'and‘enlightenment'.Region as a clue,the first stanza starts from the works that describe the three areas:northeast China,eastern Hebei,and the place where Chinese and Japanese people lived together,and explores common willingness and patriotism for writers of different cultural backgrounds to show to fight against enemies in times of national crisis,as well as Chinese and Japanese people's desire for peace.It highlights the inevitability of war narration in The Pillar under the special background of the times.The second stanza analyzes that The Pillar inherited the enlightenment consciousness of May 4th Movement in the times of‘salvation over enlightenment',insisted on liberation of‘man',close attention to the dilemma of female survival,and reflection on‘national character',showing the unique ideological character of The Pillar.Chapter Three analyzes the relationship between Lu Xun and The Pillar.The reason for the conformity between The Pillar and Lu Xun's Spirit is discussed to outline and clarify the source of Lu Xun's image evolution for further inheritance and promotion of Lu Xun's spirit from the four perspectives of‘the last journal to prop up',Lu Xun's literary creation for The Pillar,which opened up a debate front to argue with‘national defense literature',and Lu Xun's spirit embodied in‘the special issue to mourn Lu Xun'.Chapter Four expounds that realism is the theoretical support of The Pillar in literary controversy,which strove for writers'freedom to create in the controversy of‘two slogans'.It advocated realism in the discussion of‘almost',and promoted actively the construction of literary theories.Conclusion positions The Pillar.It is reiterated that The Pillar with writers'sense of social responsibility uncovered the darkness of society,and played the strongest sound of anti-Japanese and national salvation from the standpoint of liberalistic intellectuals in the war years.Following the tradition of the May 4th Movement,it propagated individuality and freedom,inclined to no party,and passed on the spirit of independence that a writer should have in running a magazine.In the light of creation method of realism,it promoted the development of literature and art,and established the influence and status of The Pillar in the literary world in the 1930s.
