A Practice Report On C-E Translation Of Gnomic Verses On Water And Gnomic Verses On Wood

Gnomic verse,which is called “Lexie” in Tibetan language,means “good words” or “praising words”.It is also known as philosophical poetry,mainly advocating philosophies of human life.The authors use this form of gnomic verses to describe the moral standards,the learning spirit in social life and the attitudes to get along with people.Tibetan gnomic verse is a treasure of Chinese minority culture and deserves further study.With the continuous development of globalization,the spread of Tibetan culture has a decisive significance for people of all countries in the world to comprehend and correctly understand the Chinese national culture.Therefore,the English translation of the Tibetan gnomic verses embodies Chinese scholars' emphasis on national literature,and it also reflects the Chinese translators' pursuit of promoting the development of Chinese culture,especially minority culture.This report takes the C-E translation of Gnomic Verses on Water and Gnomic Verses on Wood as samples to explore strategies and methods of translating Tibetan gnomic verses,summarize this translation practice,and let readers discover the amazing changes between Chinese and English from the perspective of translation.It is divided into four parts: the first part introduces the background,source,content and requirements of the task;the second part describes the translation process,from the text preparation and the translation plan in pre-translation process to the translation terminology,strategy selection and translation quality control during translating;the third part analyzes specific translation cases on sentence patterns and the Buddhist elements translation;the fourth part summarizes the unsolved problems in this translation practice and the inspiration and expectation for future study and work.
