This paper is a translation practice report based on the fifth chapter of California Heritage. The source text mainly narrates a series of political, economical, social and cultural transformations triggered by the gold rush in California. The translation of the book will help readers understand this important historical event in the 19th century United States. It can also help modern readers understand the living conditions of Americans at the time as well as the social and historical features at that time.At the same time,it also provides the translator with opportunities to translate professional academic works.Under the guidance of Skopos theory, the translation report aims at providing more materials for the study on the Gold Rush period of America. The author also hopes to provide meaningful reference for the related interdisciplinary translation practice. This translation report is divided into four parts. The first part is description of the translation task;the second part is description of the translation process, including preparation before translation, choice of translation theory, choice of translation strategy and implementation of translation plan;the third part mainly introduces problems encountered in the process of translating and solutions to them;the fourth part is about unresolved problems and prospects for future study and work.
