A Comparison Between English And Kazakh Translations Of China-Specific Expressions From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Based on the Skopos theory,this paper studies and evaluates the translation effects of the twenty-four China-specific expressions from the English and Kazakh versions of the Governance of China.The expressions are divided into five categories,namely number-simplified Chinese locutions,classical Chinese poetry,Chinese four-character phrases,metaphor and other China-specific expressions in politics.According to the analysis,this paper holds that the purpose of translation determines the translation strategies and methods,that is to say,the skopos rule plays the biggest role in both the English and Kazakh translations;The Kazakh translation is greatly influenced by the fidelity rule while the coherence rule has a larger effect in the English version.When it comes to specific translation strategies and methods,both prioritize the purpose of translation and focus on the cultural differences so as to achieve consistency in the language;The two translations make every effort to remain true to the original and keep the linguistic characteristics of the source text to the largest extent.
