| With the rapid development of Chinese sports in recent years,more and more people pay attention to sports events.Thanks to the advanced Internet technology,news sharing between China and the rest of the world has become a new normal.In order to help Chinese readers get more information about sports events held in other countries,Chinese media need to translate some English sports news into Chinese.Furthermore,in order to stand out among the Chinese media,they usually work hard to make their translation more attractive.In 1971,the German scholar Reiss first put forward the Functional Translation Theory,which gradually matured with the contributions of two generations of scholars.According to the Functional Translation Theory,the Skopos and functions of the target text play a major role in the selection of translation strategies.Skopos Theory,the core theory of the Functional Translation Theory,believes that "The end justifies the means".It consists of three rules,including Skopos rule,coherence rule,and fidelity rule.Based on the Skopos Theory of the Functional Translation Theory,this thesis focuses on the English to Chinese translation of sports news headlines,points out the definition and functions of sports news headlines,analyses the features of English and Chinese sports news headlines respectively from lexical and rhetorical perspectives.Then,according to their informative and appellative functions,this thesis figures out that the Skopos of their translation is to deliver information to target readers and attract them to read the whole news.Thus,the thesis proposes three translation tactics.The first one is literal translation,which can ultimately convey the main idea and expression effect of the original text;the second one is adding backgrounds,which can provide more information to target readers and help them to have a better understanding of the news;the last one is rewriting,which employs rhetorical devices to rewrite the expression style of the original text to ma:ke it more acceptable and attractive to the target readers. |
