Among China-themed Hollywood films, the Kung Fu Panda series is especially sought after by both the audience and the critic. The relevant subtitling translation studies are not very systematic and sophisticated as most academics only delve into one film or crudely classify translation approaches into the domestication and foreignization. This film series is full of cultural images, some of which are "cultural hybridity" created by Hollywood producers,or the "Chinese culture through the lenses of westerners".The translation process, therefore, becomes a process to restore the cultural images or to adapt them into new elements that take on a new life in the target language context. This paper aims to explore how different subtitlers deal with the cultural images and provide insights for future studies. This thesis analyzes the various translation strategies adopted by professional subtitlers and fansubbers by factoring in Jan Pedersen's translation strategies theory,Palmer's cultural linguistics, and the case is designed within the framework of the multimodal analysis. The case study chooses to compare the Shanghai Film Dubbing Studio's official version and a popular fansubbing version by YYeTs,an online subtitling group and their translation strategies in handling different cultural images. The aim of this study is to enrich the subtitling studies and provide practical suggestions for the translation of culture-specific items in audiovisual material. The preliminary findings are as follows:for two major types of cultural images, namely, cultural fabrications and extralinguistic cultural references, subtitlers tend to employ interventional strategies to create new images when no cultural equivalents can be found and to avoid confusion when extralinguistic cultural references are unfaithful.Minimum change strategies are often used to render the faithful extralinguistic cultural references. The interventional strategies are the most frequently used strategies but they should be used with caution as they can distort the images. In addition, the intersemiotic feature of the AVT determines that translators cannot overlook the visual images and should align the texts with the audio modes and visual modes.
