This report is written from the perspective of Correlative Approach to Translation to analyze dialect translation in children‘s literature with the case analysis of Greyfriars Bobby,a novel written by American writer Eleanor Stackhouse Atkinson. It tells the story of a dog named Bobby guarding its owner‘s grave for fourteen years until its death. This translation project, with 12 chapters, was completed by a team of four students, and the author was responsible for chapters 10-12.With the increasing global cultural exchange,a large number of books of children‘s literature have been introduced to China.Consequently, translation of children‘s literature and studies on it are on the rise.Dialects are often used in children‘s literature to arouse reading interests of young readers and to add uniqueness to the text, thus dialects have inevitably become one of the issues that translators need to deal with. The treatment of dialects and the way to depict regional features vividly and appropriately are viewed as difficulties in translating children‘s literature.Scottish dialect spoken by most characters in chapters 10-12 becomes the most notable feature of this part and poses a great challenge in the translation process.Close translation,a key component in Newmark‘s Correlative Approach to Translation, requires that ?the more serious and important the language of the text, the more closely it should be translated?,which seems to be in line with the requirements of children‘s literature.Following the principle of close translation when translating dialects in children‘s literature can not only be meaningful to conveying regional uniqueness and representing the implication underlying sentences and styles, but also help to facilitate the reading experience of young readers. With the case analysis of Greyfriars Bobby, this report aims to analyze the significance of dialect translation, expand the way to find the meaning of dialect, and summarize the dialect treatments under Newmark‘s Correlative Approach to Translation in the translation practice. It contributes to providing reference for future translation practice.
