The textbook plays an important part in English teaching. In 2011,the Ministry of Education issued English Curriculum Standards of Compulsory Education(2011 Edition),which changed a lot in the development of English textbooks.Guided by the same syllabus, more than one series of textbooks have been published. In 2018,the Ministry of Education issued English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017 Edition)which pushes English teaching reform into a new stage. The usage of English textbooks arouses public concern again.Among them, the ones which are published by People's Education Press(PEP)and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press(FLTRP)are widely used by junior high schools in Shandong Province. These two editions have their own advantages and disadvantages. In order to study the differences between them and try to provide advice to the users, the author puts forward the following questions: 1.Are the arrangements and design of listening and reading activities in these two editions(for the seventh-graders)convenient to learn? 2.Do the amount, the question types and topics in listening activities of the two editions(for the seventh-graders)meet the needs of students and teachers? 3.Do the amount, the theme and genre in reading passages of the two editions(for the seventh-graders)meet the needs of students and teachers?During the implementation of the research, this thesis takes Cheng's internal and external evaluation and Grant's textbook evaluation table as theoretical bases, uses literature method, comparative method and questionnaire method to make a comparative study of listening activities and reading passages in these two editions(for the seventh-graders)and analyze the data through the questionnaires for the teachers and students. The findings are as follow: 1)In terms of the arrangements and design of listening and reading activities,FLTRP textbooks are superior to the PEP textbooks. Each module is divided into four parts: listening and vocabulary, pronunciation and speaking, reading and vocabulary and writing in FLTRP textbooks. It is self-explanatory and purposive for students to practice their language skills.2)In terms of the listening activities, the amount of listening activities in PEP textbooks is more than that in FLTRP;the question types in PEP are more diversified than those in FLTRP;the amount of listening topics in PEP is more than that in FLTRP.3)Regarding the reading passages, the amount in FLTRP is more than that in PEP;the theme and genre in FLTRP are more varied than in PEP.The topics in FLTRP textbooks include most of the topic categories specified in the English Curriculum Standard of Compulsory Education(2011).Meanwhile,the various after-reading activities enhanced the students' understanding of the passages, and the FLTRP pays more attention to the cultivation of students' reading ability.By analysis and comparison between the two series of teaching materials, the author attempts to give opinions to the users on how to use the textbooks creatively. The teachers can understand the current usage of English textbooks in time in order that they can use teaching material efficiently.According to the actual situation of students, teachers can make suitable adaptation for the textbook contents.
