Xue Shaohui was the first female translator in modern Chinese society whose translation was published bearing her name. She could not understand English but she translated two foreign novels,Around the World in Eighty Days and A Double Thread with her husband,Chen Shoupeng, adopting the same translation mode which had been used by another translator Lin Shu.Rewriting has been found in Xue's translation. The category discussed in this thesis is the rewriting about ethics, including the rewriting about women's virtues.Xue's rewriting was influenced by the Confucian ethics.Xue's translation also reflects her contradictory thoughts. She had been actively learning Western knowledge, but also used Confucian ethics to resist Western ethics in her translation. She supported women's education, but also adhered to women's virtues. Two pairs of contradictory thoughts have been found in Xue's ideology. The reason for the coexistence of the former pair is that they are the rigid practice of “Zhong Ti Xi Yong” theory(Chinese-style westernization theory). The reason for the latter one is that “De”(women's virtues)and “Cai”(women's education)are not contradictory in Xue's ideology, also in which,“De” takes priority over “Cai”.These contradictory thoughts are influenced by the social ideology in late Qing Dynasty, where the new and the old thoughts coexisted. They are special products of that transition stage of time. The study on Xue Shaohui's translation can help people learn more about her ideology and furthermore, how female translators in late Qing Dynasty resolved the contradiction between Western system and Chinese system, new system and old system in their translation practice.
