Moment in Peking is one of the most famous and outstanding novels of Lin Yutang’s works.Based on the translation,introduction and other research materials,this thesis clarifies the developing process of translating and introduces Lin Yutang’s works in South Korea since 1940s briefly,and mainly focuses on the translation and introduction of his novel Moment in Peking in Korea.There are mainly three questions to work on in this thesis:firstly,how does the translation and introduction of Moment in Peking has developed in Korea?Secondly,as for the Korean versions of Moment in Peking,what differences and characteristics do they have?Lastly,what kind of attitudes and comments do Korean readers and scholars hold towards Moment in Peking?With the investigation,and from the perspective of comparative literature,this thesis compares different translated versions of Moment in Peking and its acceptance in Korea and discusses the developing process of translating and introducing Moment in Peking to Korean.Firstly,the translation and introduction of Lin Yutang’s works in Korea has three stages of development:the first is an initiate period from 1940s to the middle of 1960s;the second one is a period of rapid development from the middle of 1960s to 1990s;the third one is a period of rejuvenation since 1990s.The translation and introduction of Lin Yutang’s works in Korea focused on prose.With the study of the research materials,we can draw the conclusion that the novel Moment in Peking has the most Korean versions.Secondly,this thesis makes a brief introduction of the writing process and publication of Moment in Peking.There are thirteen Korean versions of Moment in Peking,which include Park Taewon’s short version.Classifying depend on the translators there are mainly seven versions.The translators are Lee Myeonggyu,Yoon Youngchun and etc.Considering the completeness,accuracy and originality of the translations this thesis chose Lee Myeonggyu,Jo Youngki,Park Jinseok’s versions.Due to different original versions that the translators have chosen,there are also some distinguishing characteristics among different translations.On one hand,from a macro-structure perspective this thesis made a deep study on the translation of the title,chapter and the other parts of the novel.Compared with the other two,Park Jinseok’s version has the best content integrity,Lee Myeonggyu,and Jo Youngki’s versions however are influenced by the Japanese version,the translations have been abridged to reduce its length.On the other hand,on the Translation of Culture-loaded Words Park Jinseok’s version prefers local Korean common expression that leading to the easier acceptance of the novel among Korean readers meanwhile causing the loss of language characteristics and cultural phenomenon in Chinese original content.Lee Myeonggyu,and Jo Youngki’s versions used the method of transliteration and added Chinese annotation,but because of the Japanese version,errors and omissions appears frequently.At last,considering the general acceptance towards Moment in Peking,the Korean scholars have affirmed its values,either in family cultural view,or in the ideology of Taoism.Some of the Korean scholars not only focus on Momen.t in Peking itself,they also think the Cultural transmission willing of Lin Yutang by writing novel to introduce the east to the west can provide useful experience for their country.Besides,based on the research materials,Korean readers have limited knowledge about this novel even mistaken it as a novel of Pearl S.Buck.It confirms the unbalanced acceptance of prose and novel of Lin Yutang’s translation works.In conclusion,Lin Yutang’s full-length novel and its translated versions in Korean have made important contributions to the cultural and literal exchange between China and Korea.Because the author Lin Yutang was bora in China but stayed overseas for many years,he has bilingual creative ability and is actively committed to thespeciality of cultural communication.From the creation and translation intention of the novel,the study on the translation of the novel also has certain values in the translation and research in Korea. |
