Moment in Peking is regarded as one of the most influential novels of Lin Yutang. Written in English, this novel describes three big families'story in Beijing through which Lin has spread the extensive and profound Chinese culture to the world. This thesis aims to make a contrastive study of the two Chinese versions of Moment in Peking in the light of Lin Yutang's theory of translation from the aspect of translator's qualities and three criteria of good translation. The comparison of the two Chinese versions in terms of translator's qualities is made from two perspectives, norms for translators and the responsibilities of translators; the comparison in terms of criteria of good translation is made from three aspects, faithfulness, fluency and beauty. The author chose dozens of examples in the two Chinese versions of Moment in Peking and made qualitative analysis according to Lin Yutang's translation theory. The author hopes to give more suggestions for the coming out of a better translated version of Moment in Peking. After contrastive analysis, the author finds that the two translated versions are of their own characteristics, for example, Yu Fei's versions is more faithful to the original text and Zhang Zhenyu's version is more like translator's rewriting, for he has made too much changes both in content and form. Besides, both of the two Chinese versions have much space to improve and most of the mistakes could be avoided according to Lin Yutang's sentence-by-sentence translation method. On the basis of the contrastive study, a conclusion is drawn, sentence-for-sentence translation but not word-for-word translation should be adopted by translators in order to realize the beauty in sound, form, meaning and spirit. During translation, a whole sentence should be seen as a unit and both the content and form of the original text should be translated correctly in order to catch the spirit of it.
