On The Application Of Adaptation Theory In The Translation Of If Nobody Speaks Of Remarkable Things

In literary translation,translators are expected to have solid bilingual skill and to know the differences in expression and language code.They are also expected to take subjective initiative to know how the authors shape literary characters in their books and grasp the thoughts and feelings the characters are endowed.If translators fail to do the above two points,either readability or literariness may be sacrificed.It inspires the translator to search for a systematic and holistic theory to guide literary translation and to enable translators adopt flexible translation techniques to improve the quality.This report is based on the translation of Jon McGregor's novel If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things,which describes a normal street on the outskirts of London and tells stories of the people living there.The plot is full of mysteries to catch readers' attention.From the delicate description of residents' life on that street,readers become aware that things that seems small and insignificant can have huge consequences.This report employs the four angles of the adaptation theory,i.e.contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamic of adaptability,salience of the adaptation processes,to guide the translating task.In the process,the translator finds that adaptation theory is very instructive in exploring strategies of literary translation.Adopting adaptation theory in a proper way can better satisfy the needs of textual characteristics and target readers,can provide a faithful and readable translation version with the help of some detailed translation strategies.Last but not the least,the translator aims to make some helpful conclusion in applying the theory to literary translation and improve the translation quality.
