| This is a project report on translation of Bruce Lee-A Life which is a biography written by Matthew Polly,an American travel writer.This book consists of three parts,namely Little Dragon,Gold Mountain and The Returned,describing the legendary life of Bruce Lee.In this book,the author tells us the story of how Bruce Lee grew from a rebellious teenager into a Hollywood famous star and the little-known side of him.Many characters related with Bruce have been mentioned and a detailed description of Bruce has been made.It is an important book for readers to learn about Bruce Lee.The translator selects Chapters 8 and 9 in the second part as translational material for this report.The two chapters mainly discuss Bruce's face-off in Oakland and how he is discovered by star hunters from Hollywood.Based on the semantic translation and communicative translation strategies proposed by Peter Newmark,the translator discusses and solves the difficulties in the translational material in terms of lexical,sentential and rhetorical levels,such as proper nouns,culturally-loaded words,common noun,sentences and figures of speech.In the translation practice,the author gives priority to communicative translation strategy and considers semantic translation as a complementary tool.Under the guidance of the communicative translation strategy,the author uses addition,substitution,the change of sentence order to deal with culturally-loaded words,sentences and figures of speech.Under the guidance of semantic translation strategy,the author figures out the exact meaning of words in the certain context and according to the principle of syntax and the writing style,the author tries to express the meaning of sentences correctly.It is hoped that this project report can shed light on translating biographies and provide more information about Bruce for readers.Through Bruce Lee-A life written by Matthew Polly,readers can learn about Chinese kung fu in the eyes of the West. |
