The Ming and Qing Dynasties were the peak period of the development of Chinese classical novels,during which a number of outstanding works emerged,including the novel "Marriage of Awakening the World",which was praised by Xu Zhimo as five.Relying on the time background from the zhengtong to Chenghua period of Ming Dynasty,with marriage and family as the core and involving all aspects of the society at that time,it truly and exquisitely shows the living conditions and psychological fluctuations of people from all walks of life in the late Ming Dynasty,thus accurately and clearly reflects decline of feudal society period,facing the severe crisis.This paper takes the character image as the core,deeply analyses the character group created by the author Xi Zhousheng,and then explains the social picture it depicts.Firstly,from the two aspects of class analysis and family analysis,this paper makes a general study of the characters in The Marriage of Awakening the World,and finds out the changing trend of each class and the reorganization of the relationship between men and women in family life.After that,the female images in the novel are separated and classified according to family roles and occupations.The characteristics of women in the novel which are different from those of traditional women in family life and career are studied,and the satisfaction of instinctive desires is obtained based on the unequal living conditions.On the other hand,according to social status,the male characters in the novel can be divided into five categories: local rulers,Confucians,religious figures,civilian class and bottom laborers.This paper analyses their desires for money and lust in the late Ming Dynasty society,which developed simultaneously under the premise of mutual commerce and ideology,resulting in dishonest folk customs and dirty and dark society reality.The analysis of the characters in the former two parts is the breakthrough point,which reflects that the feudal ethics and morals in the family have gradually collapsed,that the changes of all social class and the prevalence of individualism have made the folkways diluted and the people’s hearts immortal,that the decadent and incompetent of the feudal bureaucrats in the government and that the imperial examination system are constantly exposed to problems and drawbacks,and so on.From these three levels,it profoundly shows that the feudal state in the late Ming Dynasty has entered the twilight period,and the social crisis has been aggravating.Starting from the relationship between characters and reality,The Marriage of Awakening the World deserves to be a masterpiece of realism,which presents the social reality of the late MingDynasty in a real and three-dimensional way in front of the world.The author was deeply impressed by the fact that the country was not prosperous in the late Ming Dynasty.With the traditional narrative mode of karma,he wanted to revitalize the feudal ethics,but objectively created various and interesting characters for future generations,which enriched the gallery of characters in the history of Chinese literature,and further demonstrated that realistic novels of the Ming and Qing Dynasties concern and think about the real life.He examined the world and life with his keen eyes,looked on the fate entanglement of all kinds of characters in the novel as an outsider,and explored the tremendous impact of the expansion of desire and the decline of human nature on the society of the late Ming Dynasty.More in-depth manifestation: human beings and their individuals in the process of social and historical development suffered from collisions and challenges from many aspects,the ups and downs of life in the tangled contradictions,the irreconcilable contradictions between the satisfaction of desires and moral repression make human beings in a predicament and unable to extricate themselves.In view of the limitations of the times,the author attributes all these problems to karma,and in order to persuade people to be good and fall into the strange circle of feudal superstition.However,it gives some enlightenment to future generations.Money and power lead to the distortion and alienation of human nature.As we enter a new era,we should pay more attention to and examine ourselves,and explore our own existence and individual value.
