Textbooks are indispensable in learning and the exercises in textbooks play a key role.In second language learning,only good exercises can excite learners' interest and creativity and further improve their learning efficiency.Even though the new edition Chinese teaching materials have made improvements,there are still many that are unsatisfactory.It is demonstrated that making better exercises improve learning.This essay combines teaching practice with second language acquisition theory,education and psychology,selects “New Practical Chinese Reader 1”,the Third Edition,(annotated in English)‘Practice and Application' as the research objects.Comparing the old version(the First Edition and the Second Edition)in exercise quantity and exercise type,it analyzes quantity,difficulty,type,distribution,using frequency,question setting and so on.According to the connection between exercises and exercises with learners,it investigates the internal relation in grammar,pronunciation,vocabulary and so on.It is found that the original exercise types with better novelty and connection,and exercise distribution in Elementary textbook of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language are reasonable.Pronunciation exercises appear throughout the book that comply with the requirement of primary stage learning.Listening and retelling is beneficial and has an active significance for learners.The supplementary words in the ‘Practice and Application' part is the highlight of this textbook which provides more language materials for learners to do more practice.Reading comprehension is focused on helping learners express themselves by using whole sentences.It helps learners better in improving their communication skills.New exercise type ‘Task and Activity‘ pays more attention on the training of learners' comprehension skills.Overall,the compilation of exercise complies with the Functional Approach and the Task-based Teaching Approach.This text also reflects the theory ‘put knowledge into action'.Needless to say,New Practical Chinese Reader 1(the third edition)still needs to be perfected.It demonstrates the shortcomings about the textbook exercises: Exercise quantity and diversification are not enough and are not comprehensive.Exercise quantity in some units is uneven.Exercise difficulty needs to be differentiated.In the essay,the last part of these existing problems,and put forward countermeasures and directions to this problem.It is hoped that the present study may provide inspiration for the Chinese textbook' authors.
