Within the framework of the 5W theory of communication studies, and through the research methods of literature review, interview and multidisciplinary analysis, the paper investigates cross-cultural communication of Chinese music and the situation of Chinese music communication in such typical areas as Asia,Europe and America, and summarizes the difficulties facing Chinese music as it seeks for an international arena.Based on this, this paper, while studying ways of presenting Chinese musical talents and promoting outstanding Chinese musical works, coordinates the study of how to construct an improved industrial system for Chinese music,so as to offer the insight of the trend, strategies and prospects for Chinese music in sealing a place in the world. The paper looks into the obstacles to cross-cultural communication of Chinese music from three aspects. The first is the communication subject, including the artists' confusion about identification and the difficulty in fund-raising,insufficient momentum of continuous training for music communication personnel, and strong institutional and organizational support for the music industry. The second is the communication content, from which the paper probes into the phenomenon of cultural discount arising out of cultural differences. The third is the communication channels, which are confronted with the following problem: while musical performance forms diversify, the quality of Chinese music and the overseas education system for Chinese music communication is yet to be improved, and government-led cultural exchange programs remain less competitive;additionally, out of national security concerns,internet-based music communication channels of China are disconnected with those overseas, thus the relatively isolated internet systems for music communication. In the last section, the paper, based on the discussions of communication dilemma, proposes suggestions on how to present Chinese music to the world from three perspectives, namely subject, content and channel, including constructing a talent cultivation system, exploring Chinese elements in music and conducting targeted publicity, breaking through the unitary operation mode of operating online, and building an improved music data platform for cross-field music copyright management. The study of this paper constitutes an exploration into the cross-cultural communication of Chinese music,in which the sorting and summarizing of communication subjects, contents and channels are an attempt in constructing a foreignoriented music communication mode.It is the author's hope that this paper could be of some contribution to the future develop with its findings about the development directions of Chinese music.
