Kazuo Ishiguro,a British with Japanese background,is considered one of the most celebrated contemporary fiction authors in the world.Ranked by The Times in 2008 among "the 50 greatest British writers since 1945",he is also a Nobel Prize-winning novelist, screenwriter, and short story writer. As one of the "Three Migration Giants" in British literary circles,he regards himself as an international writer, with diversified subjects beyond national identity. In 2005,Ishiguro published his novel:Never Let Me Go and it was shortlisted for the 2005 Booker Prize, for the 2006 Arthur C.Clarke Award and for the 2005 National Book Critics Circle Award. In this novel,Kazuo Ishiguro invents a society with high level of civilization, highly developed biotechnology and mass-produced clones. The story tells the short life of the clones as organ donor, especially their friendship and love. This thesis intends to analyze the tragic story of clones based on the concept of bio-politics so as to rethink the living condition of modern people. It also discusses how to better apply power mechanism to serve the human beings and avoid that sort of human tragedy. This thesis consists of three parts:introduction gives a brief account about the author’s life and writing, analyzing research status and development trend,as well as the purpose, method and meaning of research.Michael Foucault’s discipline,Giorgio Agamben’s "Homo Sacer" and Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri’s Empire theory are introduced in this part. The second part is the following three chapters of text:chapter one bases on Foucault’s discipline theory to analyze supervision and regulation of clones in their whole life. The chapter two based on Agamben’s Homo Sacer theory tells how clones turn to "bare life" step by step.Chapter three, from the perspective of Hardt and Negri’s Empire theory, tries to discover bio-power behind organ donation system, manipulation and tactics of state bio-power and some potential danger. The last part is conclusion:under the discipline and control of rights mechanism, not only clones, but also human beings are doomed to fall prey to state politics, and organ of power should be rightly exercised to serve for people, avoiding the possibility of genocide. |
