Abstract/Summary:
This paper takes Shen Congwen’s masterpiece Biancheng and Gladys Yang’s English translation of The Border Town as the object of study.Admittedly,Yang’s translation has achieved success to a large degree, but it is not the focus of this paper. On the basis of Liu Miqing’s stylistic markedness theory,it puts emphasis on the stylistic deficiency in the translation in terms of style reproduction.First of all, based on the theory and with the help of textual analysis software ICTCLAS and Concordance, the specific performance of Shen’s style in Biancheng has been obtained. Then,a comparative study of the original work and its corresponding English translation is conducted to discover inadequacy in the English translation in terms of the representation of style. Some other appropriate translations have been provided as reference as well as modification suggestions of my own.Through the comparison between the original text and the translation,it is found that some elements of the original style are missing in the translation to varying degrees. In terms of phonology and figure of speech, the translator omits and simplifies in many ways. When translating dialectical sentences, the translator does not fully retain and reproduce the local characteristics. There are also contradictions in the translation of narrative time, which to some extent harms the original narrative art. After the comparative analysis of Biancheng and its English translation from the perspective of style,it is proved that Liu Miqing’s stylistic markedness theory is of guiding significance to translation, and also provides a new perspective for translation appreciation and analysis.
