Lexical inferencing,an effective method to deal with new words,plays an important role in the expansion of vocabulary knowledge and discourse reading comprehension.In the past related researches,there are few empirical researches on high school students in China,so this study is needed.Based on the cognitive processing model of L2 lexical inferencing,second language vocabulary processing model and empirical researches on the influencing factors of lexical inferencing at home and abroad,this experiment takes 194 students from four classes in a high school of Longyan City as the subjects,and uses introspection research method and interview method,to explore three questions:(1)What kind of knowledge source is used for lexical inferencing?(2)What is the correlation between the English test scores and the test results of lexical inferencing?(3)What is the impact of different English proficiency on the test results of lexical inferencing?The results are as follows.(1)The knowledge sources used in the lexical inferencing process are presented in a shared mode,including linguistic knowledge sources and non-linguistic knowledge sources,the former being more frequently used(97.52%)and the latter less-often applied(2.48%).Within the linguistic knowledge sources,the sentence-level knowledge source is the most commonly used(36.53%),the discourse-level knowledge source the second frequently used(33.98%),and the vocabulary-level knowledge source least(27.01%).including both linguistic and non-linguistic knowledge.The high,medium and low English proficiency groups also share an approximately similar pattern of relative frequency in using these knowledge sources.(2)There is a positive correlation between the English scores and the results of lexical inferencing(r=0.547).To interpret,the higher the English test scores are,the higher the lexical inferencing effect,and vice versa.(3)The average success rate of lexical inferencing for the high English proficiency group(23.68)is much higher than that for the medium(17.11)and that for the low proficiency group(13.30),which indicates that English proficiency is positively correlated with the success rate of lexical inferencing.There is a significant difference in the success rate of lexical reasoning in the high,medium and low English proficiency groups(Between high and middle English proficiency test group p=0.000,between high and low English proficiency test group p=0.000,between medium and low English proficiency test group p=0.025).Based on the above research contents,the author puts forward the corresponding English vocabulary teaching suggestions from 3 aspects: to cultivate lexical inferencing consciousness,to expand vocabulary knowledge,and to infiltrate learning methods of lexical inferencing.
