A Report On The Translation Of Introduction To Chinese Culture

The Chinese culture,both extensive and profound,starts far back and runs a long course,of which the Chinese feel deeply proud.Under the background of globalization,China’s status and influence have become more and more eye-catching.Chinese culture has aroused the curiosity of foreigners,and to certain extent,translation is a bridge for Chinese culture to be connected with the world.The translation materials of this report are selected from Chapter 15 of Introduction to Chinese Culture,“Types and Characteristics of Chinese Culture”.The translation of Introduction to Chinese Culture will help to popularize Chinese culture,thinking,values and social conditions to foreign readers,especially British and American readers.This report first introduces the research background,purpose and status quo,and then explains the steps of the translation process.The translation materials contain many culture-loaded words and classical quotations.Therefore,the author mainly adopts the literature study and the case study method.First,the author collects and collates the previous annotations on classical quotations and the literature materials of Chinese cultural translation,and obtains the relevant translation methods.On this basis,the paper summarizes the main points on the difficulties in the translation of Introduction to Chinese Culture and combines own translation practice of Introduction to Chinese Culture to demonstrate the translation strategies by case study.By analyzing and discussing the translation of Introduction to Chinese Culture,this report finds that the translation of culture-loaded words by transliteration plus annotation or free translation is easy for foreign readers to understand and accept.Where the translation of classical quotations is concerned,many elements that have been omitted should be added to make the original meaning fully expressed.The translator should show the cultural and ideological defaults equipped with rich connotations to the target readers as completely and clearly as possible.In tackling the translation of long and difficult sentences,the translators are expected first to figure out the technical terms and difficult words in sentences,then integrate the sentence meaning and adopt the appropriate translation strategies such as division,conversion,etc.to give help to the readers to fully internalize and interpret the intension of the original language situation.
