Anxiety is one of the important affective factors affecting students' spoken English.It is inevitable for freshmen to have anxiety in spoken English when facing the new life and learning environment.Therefore,to explore the basic situation of oral anxiety of senior one students in English classroom,to alleviate their oral anxiety and to improve their spoken English level,this study will mainly explore the following three issues:Firstly,do senior one students have oral anxiety in English class? If so,are there any differences between genders and grades in oral anxiety of senior one students in English class?Secondly,what are the causes of oral anxiety of senior one students in English class?Thirdly,what strategies can alleviate oral anxiety of senior one students in English class?Based on Krashen's Emotional Filtering Hypothesis and Humanistic Psychology,202 students and 4 English teachers from a middle school in Chongqing are investigated by using three research methods: questionnaire survey,classroom observation and interview recording.By sorting out and analyzing records of questionnaires,classroom observations and interview,this study draws the following two conclusions:Firstly,senior one students have oral anxiety in English classes,and there is no significant difference between genders and grades in oral anxiety of senior one students in English class.Secondly,there are two main reasons for students' oral anxiety in English class:external factors and internal factors.External factors include teachers' corrective methods,interpersonal relationship,evaluation methods and classroom atmosphere.Internal factors include students' learning attitude,self-confidence,personality factors and communication strategies.Both of them have an impact on students' oral anxiety to a certain extent.In view of the above two conclusions,this study puts forward correspondingstrategies to alleviate the oral anxiety of senior one students in English classroom.In terms of teachers,teachers can improve oral error correction methods to protect students' self-esteem by indirect error correction and group error correction,help students establish good interpersonal relationships by organizing collective life,stimulate students' interests in learning by encouraging evaluation,create a good classroom atmosphere by reasonably choosing oral English topics and establishing good teacher-student relationship and respect individual differences by reasonably allocating study groups.In terms of students,students should correct learning attitudes by changing learning concepts and formulating reasonable learning plans,students can enhance self-confidence and overcome inferiority by facing up to the shortcomings,making best use of the advantages and bypassing the disadvantages and self-encouragement,and students should also rationally use communication strategies to improve communication skills.
