A Report On C-E Translation Of A Feasibility Study Report From The Perspective Of Text Typology

This paper is a report on the C-E translation of a feasibility study report of the power plant transformation project.The source text comes from the seventh chapter "Engineering Projection" of a Feasibility Study Report on the Renovation Project of the Alpat Aluminum Oxide Plant of Jiuquan Iron and Steel Plant.The original scientific report belongs to informative text,according to Newmark's theory of text typology.In addition to the "specialized" and "wide" terms,there are also many fixed expressions,category words,and a large number of verbs involved in the source text.After the consultation of scientific documents and establishment of a glossary according to the principle of "official version-convention as transliteration-free translation",translation techniques such as lexical conversion,omission and substitution are adopted.Most of the sentences in the source text are non-subject sentences.Besides,a large number of fixed structures and long difficult sentences are involved.According to the text type theory,the translation of informative text should be simple,concise and accurate,leading to idiomatic English expression.Therefore,there are two main ways to translate Chinese sentences without subjects:transforming them into passive sentences,or adding subjects to English sentences.The translation techniques of long complex sentences mainly include order-changing translation and division.As for discourse,the biggest difference lies in the coherence between sentences and paragraphs.The source text has lots of sentences with Chinese characteristics,and there is no obvious conjunction between sentences and paragraphs.It is necessary to add conjunctions to highlight the logical relationship in sentences in Chinese English translation.
