A Report On The Translation Of A Companion To Bioethics (Chapter One And Part Of Chapter Two)

This article is a translation report.The source text of this translation project was taken from the book A Companion to Bioethics.The book is divided into thirteen parts,starting from the concept of bioethics and then respectively exploring the issues related to bioethics,ethics,reproductive issues,new genetics,life and death,resource allocation,organ donation,AIDS,experiments on human and animal and issues of health care.The book also includes new articles written for current controversial topics such as cloning and genetic modification.The chosen part of this translation report mainly focuses on medical ethics,nursing ethics,ethics theory and bioethics,etc..The difficulty of this translation is that the source text contains a large number of specialized words,requiring the translator to master the background knowledge of bioethics.In addition,sentences in source text are mostly long ones,which challenges the translator’s ability to think logically and basic skills of language.Under the theory of translation,the translator chooses Eugene A.Nida’s "functional equivalence" standard as the theoretical guidance in combination with the language features of the source text and uses a variety of translation methods such as free translation,translation method of adding,and conversion,etc.,analyzing and solving the key and difficult points in translation.This project aims to make Chinese readers accessible to the Chinese version of bioethics information through accurate translation.By writing the translation project report,the translator is deeply aware that in order to be an excellent translator,she needs not only a solid bilingual ability and a wide range of knowledge,but,above all,a tough mind.Through this translation project,the translator has accumulated rich experience in the process of translating and has learned lessons as well,hoping to make greater progress in the future in translating.
