In recent years, economic growth and globalization are driving the need for translation.Translators are more and more caring about how to produce qualified translation with limited time.In the meantime, machine translation is developing in a rapid fashion. Therefore, machine translation plus post-editing(MT+PE)is a possible solution to enhance efficiency. To clarify whether MT+PE is applicable in all circumstances and when it is applicable is of practical significance. This thesis aims to analyze feasibility of MT+PE in technical and promotional documents from aspects of text type, function, and quality requirements of translation. It is a case study based on English to Chinese translation projects including lift assembly instructions and video script of Hainan promotional TV programs. The author finds that it is suitable to apply MT+PE in technical documents because these documents are straightforward and with simple sentence structure. In additional, they are used by professionals who are familiar with terminology. Therefore,Accuracy is more important than beautiful language in translating these documents. For promotional documents, the author finds that MT+PE is not applicable because these documents are of rich cultural content and beautiful words.Additionally, language quality is of great importance because promotional documents are used to attract and impact audience. It is difficult to produce qualified translation based on MT outputs. It is hoped that this thesis will remind translators to think about feasibility before using MT+PE and will provide a useful reference for translators who will be involved in translating such documents.
