A Practical Report On The C-E SI Of "2016 Conference Of The Northeast Asia International Language And Culture Research Base"

In this information age,the international conference has acted as an important arena for the discussion of common issues and coordination of the interests among countries.The content of the conference is more and more diversified,including politics,economy,culture and education and hence international conference interpreting is a task which requires great interpreting ability of the interpreters.Accordingly,the research on the conference interpreting seems to be more necessary.This practical report is the author's personal experience working as a C-E simultaneous interpreter at the annual conference of the Northeast Asia International Language and Culture Research Base held in Jilin University in September 2016.The conference addresses the issues of communication of language and culture and the international cooperation in Northeast Asia area.The author engaged in two parts of the interpreting tasks: the first part involves three speeches at the opening ceremony,and the second is an academic speech by Prof.Li Shengpeng.The entire interpretation was conducted without text reference,which was really a challenge for the author.The practical report is mainly based on the problems that occurred during the interpreting process.This report begins with the introduction of the task description and its process.Then,it analyzes the transcribed text from two aspects: lexical and syntactic features.And it ends with a detailed analysis of the problems encountered and the strategies to cope with those problems.Three problems are identified as inappropriate interpretation of Chinese four-character structures,illogical interpretation of Chinese non-subject sentences,and improper repetition of similar information.The strategies the author puts forward,with reference to the feedback from the audience,cover literal translation and free translation,adding subjects and changing sentence structures,and combining similar information.This practical report aims to give some clarity and guidance to those who will engage in interpreting in the future.
