The reform of curricula and textbooks is always an important part to develop quality education,because curricula and textbooks are the basic tools for both teachers' teaching and students' learning.At the beginning of 21 st century,China started a new round of curricula reform,and many schools began to develop school-based curricula.In the process of the reform,primary and secondary schools are encouraged to develop or choose curricula in accordance with local social and economic realities,school traditions and characteristics,as well as the interests and needs of students.School-based textbooks are also by-products in this reform,but the evaluation of school-based textbooks and teaching results is rare.In this thesis,the author will investigate the school-based English textbook of Middle School Affiliated to Shanghai Sports University and answer these questions:(1)Can the textbook meet the needs of physical education students in the senior year?(2)Are there any problems that occur to the teaching contents or the adopting process of the textbook?(3)Are there any strategies to improve the textbook?In order to answer the above three questions,the author finished the following steps:(1)analyzing the content of the textbook to understand the knowledge and skills presented in it;(2)observing how the teachers use the textbook in class and how the students react to the textbook as well as to the teaching activities designed by teachers;(3)getting a variety of in-depth investigation of teaching contents and teaching effects of the textbook from students and teachers by using questionnaires and interviews;(4)conducting a post-questionnaire-interview among some students and teachers to get their further evaluation of the textbook.Research findings show:(1)The textbook meet the needs of most physical education students in the senior year.(2)Some texts are reports of the events and competitions occurred a few years ago,which don't appeal to the current students;in addition,the grammar and vocabulary exercises as well as the passages for reading comprehension are too easy.(3)There are two strategies to improve the textbook: on the one hand,teachers should add or delete something to meet the requirements of the examination and strengthen the connection between teaching contents and students' real life;on the other hand,as a school-based English textbook used by physical education students,it should be updated constantly to let students get the latest information of social and sports events.
