The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017)lays stress on developing students’ core competences including language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability,which is characterized by instrumentality and humanity.Based on the nature of English discipline,The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School also advocates that English teachers should focus on thematic significance and aim at developing students’ core competences in practical teaching.In addition,it is also suggested that overall unit teaching objectives oriented to the development of core competences ought to be designed by The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School.At the same time,it is advised that activity-oriented English learning view is supposed to be carried out so as to effectively promote the formation of core competences.However,the present English teaching in senior high schools still runs counter to the requirements by The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School in some ways.Therefore,it is extremely urgent and necessary to improve the effect of English teaching so as to develop students’ core competences and meet the requirements by The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School through making effective instructional design.As a new educational concept based on students’ interests,maker education advocates “practice,innovation and sharing”,which can exactly meet the requirements by The English Curriculum Standard for senior high school.Therefore,this paper tries to make instructional design under the guidance of maker education and apply it to practical teaching so as to narrow the gap between the present English teaching and the requirements by The English Curriculum Standard for senior high school as well as to develop students’ core competences.On the basis of the research purposes above,this research is conducted around such three questions:(1)What is the relevance between maker education and the requirements by The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017)?(2)What is the applicationeffect of theme-based unit instructional design in the light of maker education?(3)What are the implementation strategies on how to apply theme-based unit instructional design in the light of maker education to English teaching?In the beginning of this research,the relevance between maker education and the requirements by The English Curriculum Standard for senior high school is analyzed through documentary research.After that,this paper attempts to conduct a theme-based unit instructional design mode guided by maker education for senior high school English teaching on the basis of referring to existing teaching modes under maker education.Then,the theme-based unit instructional design mode guided by maker education is applied to the English teaching of Class 5 and Class 14 of Tianshui No.1 Senior High School in order to test its’ effect.In the course of application research,each unit of compulsory book 5 and elective book 6 is systematically interpreted at first.And then,the units with the same theme are integrated into new theme-based units and a thematic project is determined accordingly.Finally,instructional design and teaching activities are carried out around a specific thematic project in the light of maker education.At the end of one-semester practical teaching,an application case is presented to show how to apply theme-based unit instructional design mode guided by maker education.What’s more,questionnaire and interview are adopted to show its detailed application effect.As a result,it is found that the application of theme-based unit instructional design mode guided by maker education to English teaching can produce the following teaching effects: Firstly,it can arouse students’ learning interest and motivation;Secondly,it can develop students’ learning self-confidence;Thirdly,it can develop students’ cross-cultural communication awareness;Lastly,it can improve students’ language application ability.In addition,some implementation strategies on applying maker education to English teaching are acquired too by this paper on the basis of the whole research process and results,such as,integration strategy of units with the same themes based on the new curriculum standards and students’ real life,project determination and implementation strategy based on project themes and diversified evaluation strategies of thematic projects.
