English test paper review class(ETPRC)is a session for teachers and students to focus on English test(s)already taken by students to review and solve problems.Through such process, the students are expected to find and solve their problems, consolidate their knowledge, and expand the depth of understanding. However, many teachers stick to the traditional teaching-dominated practice, during which students passively listen and take notes, resulting in many cases low efficiency of classroom learning. In order to encourage the students to participate actively, the current study brings Peer-Assisted Learning(PAL)into the ETPRC,aiming at enhancing learners’ cooperative learning ability, their enthusiasm and learning effect in the third graders of a junior high school.Three are three research questions:(1)Can PAL improve students’ English achievement after its application in the ETPRC?(2)Is PAL effective for students at different levels?(3)Can PAL improve students’ attitudes towards the English test paper review class? Two classes participated in the study, one as the experimental class(161),and the other as the control class(159).The experiment began in September 2017 and ended at the end of January2018.In the course of teaching experiment, questionnaire, interview and examination papers were used to collect relevant data, both before and after the experiment. The experimental results show the effectiveness of PAL in junior high school in the ETPRC:(1)Through PAL,student’s English academic achievement in the experimental class has improved significantly compared with the control class.(2)PAL improved the academic performance of all the students in different learning levels.(3)PAL helped to create a relaxed classroom atmosphere, improve students’ learning enthusiasm and improve students’ attitudes towards the ETPRC.
