Academic research about Ma Lin's painting Quietly Listening to the Wind in the Pines is relatively fragmented,and there are very few detailed investigations on this painting.Therefore,this article conducted a comprehensive and detailed analysis on the key element in Ma Lin's painting Quietly Listening to the Wind in the Pines and tried to differentiate the identities of the main characters,which were finally considered as a hermit such as Tao Hongjing in southern dynasty.This article first pointed out that the mode of 'one master one servant' in Ma Lin's painting was inherited from the painting schema of his farther Ma Yuan,and then investigated the historical origin of such painting schema of'one master one servant'.Furthermore,this article concluded that the paintings in song dynasty,such as waterfalls,watching clouds,playing zither,and facing the moon also has the characteristics of such a scheme.In addition,by going through the paintings with the theme of 'waterfalls,watching clouds,playing zither,and facing the moon',this article putted forward that such phenomenon was affected by the traditions of poetic painting at the very beginning of its formation.Finally,this article analyzed the development and evolution of 'one master one servant' schematic paintings as well as its impacts on literati paintings in Yuan and Ming dynasties.
