In the era of rapid globalization,it is increasingly important for translators to convey information efficiently.Translators should ensure the accuracy of the translation while making their translation easier to understand.Plain English Campaign calls on clear,concise,well-organized writing that is understandable by target audience in non-literary texts.Based on case examples from the translation projects of research reports on investment environment,this paper discussed on how to apply Federal Plain Language Guidelines to Chinese-English translation of such research reports to improve readability of the English translation.The paper analyzed six principles of plain English that are applicable to the texts in question,including using active voice,omitting unnecessary words,avoiding hidden verbs,writing short sentences,keeping subject,verb,and object close together,and using lists.To help translators use the principles properly and facilitate the effectiveness and efficiency of communication,the paper underlined that translators should at first fully analyze the original texts to understand its key information and intention. |
