A Study On The Strategies Of Impoliteness And Their Pragmatic Functions In Wang Xifeng's Utterances

In recent years,the study of “impoliteness” has received many scholars' attention from abroad and home.Scholars abroad have carried out a lot of relevant researches from the perspectives of pragmatics,cognition,and sociolinguistics.Compared with researches abroad,few researches have been made at home,especially on the analysis of characters' personalities in literary works through the strategies of impoliteness.The study is mainly a qualitative study,with a little combination of quantitative study.The impoliteness model constructed by Bousfield and the face theory proposed by Brown and Levinson are applied to analyze the strategies of impoliteness applied in Wang Xifeng's utterances in the Chinese classical novel A Dream of Red Mansions(the Chinese Version).And this study aims to explore the personalities of Wang Xifeng reflected by the application of different strategies of impoliteness.The study finds:(1)There are totally ten strategies of impoliteness in Wang Xifeng's utterances,and each of them can reflect certain personalities of Wang Xifeng.(2)From the study of the functions of strategies of impoliteness in Wang Xifeng's utterances,the study generalizes two categories of functions: positive function and negative function,and more detailed functions are subdivided under each category.(3)In terms of factors that affect Wang Xifeng's use of strategies of impoliteness,factors from perspectives of gender,self-cultivation,social status and social distance are analyzed.Especially the influence of different social status and social distance on Wang Xifeng's use of strategies of impoliteness can reflect her personalities vividly.Through the analysis of the strategies of impoliteness in Wang Xifeng's utterances,this study broadens the perspective of impoliteness research,and provides a new angle for the study of characters in literary works.Thus,it contributes to a better understanding of the image of Wang Xifeng and the application of strategies of impoliteness.
