Pragmatic Study On Impoliteness In Chinese Job-hunting TV Program

Compared with politeness,impoliteness is misunderstood by human beings as a kind of marginal language phenomena,thus causing the imbalance on academic study.Since recent years,more literature works could be found because of the reorientation and importance of impolite utterances.Browsing the literature works,there is no doubt that foreign scholars do in-depth and in-breadth researches on impolite utterances.However,most of the linguistic data in their researches come from English culture rather than Chinese counterpart.Based on this point,the thesis selects the impolite utterances in Chinese job-hunting TV program Only For You as its linguistic data.In order to fill the gap,the author employs the impoliteness framework of Bousfield(2008a)to analyze the impolite utterances in job-hunting TV program Only For You.The thesis mainly focuses on the following questions:(1)Whether the impoliteness strategy proposed by Bousfield(2008a)can be applicable to the impolite utterances in Chinese job-hunting TV program?(2)Are there any differences among host,bosses,HRs and candidates in issuing impoliteness strategy?(3)What are the functions of impoliteness strategy in Chinese job-hunting TV program Only For You? To begin with,the author selects 28 among many episodes by browsing the indicating themes proposed by the official website of Aiqiyi.Next,the author chooses impolite utterances in each episode by the way of establishing some criteria and keeping a record of impolite utterances.Last,some impolite utterances are translated according to the subtitles broadcast at the bottom of screen.After collecting linguistic data and doing analytical work,the research shows that it is suitable to analyze the impolite utterances in Only For You under Bousfield’s(2008a)impoliteness strategy.Judging from this point,it is predictable to know that Bousfield’s impoliteness strategy can be applied into Chinese job-hunting TV program.By calculating the frequency,the author finds the bosses in the program use impolite utterances most,followed by candidates,host,HRs.For specific impoliteness strategy,host and bosses prefer employing the impoliteness strategy of criticizing and hindering,but the reasons why they prefer are different.Many candidates in the program are passive,so they often choose the impoliteness strategy of withholding politeness.Although HRs play a third party role in the program,they prefer to offer advice by using the impoliteness strategy of criticizing and threatening.What is more,the impoliteness strategy of criticizing and threatening often occur in the same impolite utterances.Based on the collecting linguistic data and analytical work,the author summarizes that the impoliteness strategies have the function of venting negative emotions,revealing power and entertaining.In the end,the author states the flaws of the present study and gives suggestions about further study.(1)Para-linguistic feature cannot be ignored in discourse analysis,so the study would be more convincing if para-linguistic features are presented at the same time.(2)The reason why people choose impoliteness in their conversation is complicated,so the further study could do an in-depth study on the reasons related to social elements about choosing impoliteness strategy.(3)It is beneficial for cross-cultural communication that the further study could have a try on the comparison between English and Chinese impoliteness strategy.
