There are synonyms in any natural language,so is modern Chinese.However,there has been controversial about it.To sort out and summarize the research findings of synonym can help us understand synonymy comprehensively.The research process of synonym can be grasped.More accurate conclusions can be got.In the paper,we divide the research into the embryonic stage,the development stage and the innovation stage.It is convenient for readers to grasp the development of an issue so that they can understand the whole development process.During different stages,different issues on synonyms have been settled.So we can grasp the latest analysis of synonyms.The representative views will be described and analyze the specific examples that appear in the literates through the objective criteria,especially some controversial examples.Then we can manage to come up with our own idea.Through the study,we have a clear understanding of the synonyms related issues.Expressions sharing the same meaning are synonymous.The same meanings refer to the same grammatical meaning and lexical meaning.Absolute synonyms are expressions that have identical meanings and that all dimensions of meaning are semantically equivalent,the absolute synonym is extremely rare.Expressions which have different expressive meaning or not all their meanings are identical are also synonyms.Near-Synonyms are expressions which have similar meanings,near-Synonyms and synonyms should be different from each other.Expressions implying approval and disapproval are not synonyms but near-synonyms.The synonym is the stable semantic unit in a certain natural language system in the same vocabulary system.The dynamic synonyms formed by the context are not the objects of our research.In the paper,synonyms belong to modern Chinese vocabulary system,including the ancient expressions,dialect expressions,foreign expressions assimilated to it.Expressions belong to relationships,such as whole and part,specific and general.Substitution is a simple and operational method for synonym judgment but not as a decisive condition.Synonyms do not necessarily have exactly the identical collocations,nor are they can be replaced with each other in any context.
