The Study Of Thousand-arm And Thousand-eye Guan Yin In Dunhuang

Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin is one of the six great Guanyin of Esoteric Buddhism.There was a Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin during the Flourishing Tang Dynasty in Dunhuang.Through the development of the Flourishing Tang dynasty to the Xixia and Yuan dynasty,Dunhuang's Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin presents unique development and evolution trend,and the belief of Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin also affects the daily life of the people and monks in the Dunhuang area.The core of the research is theme and content,manuscripts basis and religious connotation,function and belief of Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin in Dunhuang.The research method is mainly to use the method of historical documentation to interpret the relevant contents of the manuscripts,analyze the composition and characteristics of the murals by using the iconology,archaeology and art history,compare with the grottoes murals in other areas,and frame the theoretical framework of Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin image system.There are three aspects of the contents in the paper.First,introducing the Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin manuscripts from the Sutra-Library Cave of Dunhuang,comparing and analyzing of the similarities and differences between the two.Second,analysing of the composition of the Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin of paintings,drawings and murals of Dunhuang grottoes.Arranging the relationship between Buddhist documents,Dunhuang documents,vow texts and the Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin murals.Third,through studying the Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin's manuscripts and murals of Dunhuang,and Understanding the reasons and social functions of the Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin prevalent in Dunhuang area.The popularity of he Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin is closely related to the background of the prevalence of Esoteric Buddhism,and the specific political environment and social background of Dunhuang are also inseparable.The belief of the Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin has penetrated into all aspects of the social life of the people,and belief isvery practical,so the belief of the Thousand-arm and Thousand-eye Guanyin has been popular in Dunhuang.
