Back To Basics-The Research Of Cotman's Landscape Art

John Sell Cotman lived in the era of British watercolor painting in the 19 th century,and the same time with Turner,Girtin called the three major giants.Cotman's landscape painting is unique,he is different from other painters that pay attention to the atmosphere rendering,adhere to the depiction of natural truth.Although not noticeable at the time,but his artistic ideas and drawing skill from the perspective of the future,added a distinctive touch to the history of British painting.This article through four chapters content from the introduction English watercolors and the Cotman historical background,and analysis of the sketch,monochrome paintings,watercolor paintings and oil paintings of the various periods,and with other painting techniques depicting d ifferent subjects.Combined with the artist's works of personal fore-and-aft comparison,and compared with other painters' works,and the interaction of the contemporary painters.This paper expounds the artistic features and styles formed by painters in different periods,sums up the contemporary significance of Cotman landscape paintings and the enlightenment of insist on the road of himself art.
