A Translation Report On The Art Of Translation (Chapter 2)

The present report is on the translation of The Art of Translation(Chapter 2),which does not have a Chinese version.It is a translation theory work written by the Czech translation theorist Jiri Levy.The translation task,the second chapter of the work,mainly focuses on the process of translation,emphasizing the origin and the three-step process of the literary translation: comprehension,interpretation,and re-stylization.The attention has been paid to the translating processes and its detailed analysis of the three steps.This translation practice report is based on the Eugene Nida’s theory of Functional Equivalence since The Art of Translation is mainly an informative text.Functional Equivalence focuses on the meaning rather than the form,it can guide the translation of the source text.The present translation report is divided into five parts: the first part is to introduce the translation text and project;the second section is to describe the translation process;the third part discusses is Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory;the fourth part analyzes the translation cases in terms of lexical and syntactic levels according to the relative theory;the fifth part is to summarize the translation report and the merits of the translation text and shortcomings of my own translating work.The source text is a philosophically profound work with long and complicated sentences.Under the guide of Functional Equivalence Theory,the translator pursues the same reactions from source language readers and target language readers and focuses on the meanings rather than the forms.Translating this work helps to understand Jiri Levy and his translation theory.It is also beneficial to expand the resources on translation theories.Besides,this translation project enables the translator to improve her translation level.The translator hopes that it will make the author’s academic work and viewpoints better known by more Chinese readers.
