This report is based on the English-Chinese translation project of Ethical Issues in Six Religious Traditions. The author extracts the fifth section of this book.Based on Relevance Theory, this report attempts to explore the optimal relevance on the part of translator during the process of translation. From the perspective of Relevance Theory, the process of translation is to realize the optimal relevance between the target text and the source text,so that the readers can obtain the maximum contextual effect through minimal processing effort. As one form of communication, translation is primarily an ostensive-inferential cognitive process.Under the guidance of Gutt‘s relevance theory, the expectations and cognitive environment of the target audience are fully considered in the pursuit of optimal relevance,so that the original author's intention is consistent with the target audience's expectations. This translation report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the translation task.In the second chapter, the author presents how the translation project is finished,i.e.the whole process from the preparation before translation to the collation after the completion of the translation. The third chapter is the theoretical ground of the report, which illustrates ?Optimal Relevance? and ?Cognitive Context?.In the fourth chapter, the author analyzes the typical examples to present how the author understands under the guidance of ?Optimal Relevance? and ?Cognitive Context? in the process of translation. Finally, the author summaries her experiences through translation practice and gives some suggestions for MTI students.
