| In the criticism to the feudal culture since the May 4th Movement,the “Four Wangs”‘s achievements to painting art have also been involved in this controversy。In the last hundred years,there are different versions of misreading on the “Four Wangs”’s works,but they should be judged base on the historical environment and social conditions during their own periods to avoid these misreading.In Qing Dynasty the “Four Wangs” were respected and loved as the times leaders on landscape painting.But in the early twentieth Century of China,the society was in a great turmoil and there were cultural conflicts between the East and the West in the art area.Different opinions were raised in the traditional art,thus the judgments on “Four Wangs”’s were changed from the earlier period in Qing Dynasty.The start of the big criticism to the“Four Wangs” was from some politicians and cultural figures at that time during the new cultural tread in the May 4th Movement,to serve their political reform needs.They simply put up the label such as “just follow the old routes” and “without innovation” on the “Four Wangs”’s works.From then on,the misreading changes as the time goes on,behind these phenomena there were complex political reasons and cultural factor and it is hard to be defined.Until the re-compact of the West culture to the Chinese traditional culture during the August 5th Trend of Thought,the criticism and deny to the traditional Chinese painting such as the “Four Wangs” was still strongly infected by the May 4th Movement and the “Four Wangs” was treated as a obstacle in the development of the modernization of Chinese painting.But since the great economic development and the raise of the international status of China,the Chinese people start to regain their cultural confidence and begin to understand the value of traditional culture again.Especially in the approval on art value of Bing Huang,the “Four Wangs” are redefined as the inspiration of Bing Huang’s works.This essay starts from the misreading of the “Four Wangs” during the earlier period and follow the time line to investigate them in different language environments,to uncover the reasons of these misreading and intend to return the judgments of “Four Wangs” to their original ones in the history of painting. |
