China’s rising reputation on the geopolitical stage is arousing the world’s attention and an increasing number of international conferences are being held in the country. As a result, the demand for interpretation services has increased as well.Consecutive interpreting, which generally demands more accuracy than simultaneous interpreting, serves as a popular way of communication in conferences with people speaking different languages.Utilization of consecutive interpreters is preferable on occasions that demand high levels of detail. In most universities, consecutive interpreting is also a required course for student interpreters, yet beginners are often constrained by the structure of source texts due to their limited understanding of faithfulness. This problem always emerges in impromptu speeches and in particular where structures are rather loose.Students normally use well-formed speeches in their daily translation exercises, however, the author found that in working scenarios, speakers usually don’t follow their scripts. They tend to use their own mannerisms when presenting speeches which highlights problems such as repetition, redundancy and non-sequitur logic. These inconsistencies make it extremely difficult for interpreters to convey and increase the overall quality of the translation. In order to solve these problems,in this thesis, the author cites a representative speech delivered by Mr.Qu Dongyu, the Vice Minister of Ministry of Agriculture, and introduces three simplification skills to deal with increased complexity: omission, simplification and compression.Besides, the author analyzes how these three types of simplification skills help to improve interpreting performance.Through the thesis, the author hopes that inexperienced student interpreters can learn simplification skills to flexibly deal with impromptu Chinese speeches.
