Liu Shiwei is a unique novelist in contemporary Chinese literature.He has a wealth o f social experience,profound knowledge and accomplishment.He used to go down to the s ea to do business.After returning,he created three novels.including "Zai Shi guang zhi wai"(2007),"Zheng Jiu"(2011)and "The Secret of the South"(2016).Among them,"The Secret of the South" is the latest one(which is published by Writers Publishing House in December 2016).The rich character of the novel,witty language expression,and profound depth of thought make this novel an outstanding contemporary literature works.This artic le takes the lexis of "The Secret of the South" as the object of study,strives to describe the lexis of the novel in a comprehensive and objective way,shows the linguistic features of t he work,and provides a reference for vocabulary research.The content of the paper is divi ded into five chapters:The first chapter introduces the current situation of lexis research and the overview of authors and works,explains the source of the linguistic materials,research methods,theor etical basis and research significance.The second chapter focuses on the analysis of the dialect vocabulary that appeared in The Secret of the South.The use of a large number of dialect vocabulary in the novel pres ents the unique language style of Jianghan Plain.Some of the dialect vocabularies in the w orks have been annotated or phoneticed in the book.Other dialect vocabularies are classifi ed based on their part of speech,and they are also compared with Mandarin.The third chapter describes the use of idioms in The Secret of the South.It mainly inc ludes Chinese classical phrases,idioms,proverbs,and paroles.The use of these idioms sha pes the work's calm but also lively,humorous but also profound style,making the languag e of the work meaningful.Chapter IV briefly exemplifies the special lexis of “The Secret of the South”,includin g lexis of the era used in the period before and after the reform and opening up,business s ector language,metaphorical names and noun words using rhetorical.Studying and exploring the lexis of The Secret of the South is conducive to exploring the verbal art of the novel,showing the concrete evolution and status of contemporary soc iety,and understanding the contemporary artists' artistic refinement and aesthetic expressi on of contemporary life.
