This translation report is completed based on the translation of Prosodic Phonology(Chapter 2)written by two phonologists: Marina Nespor and Irene Vogel. The book containing eleven chapters systematically introduces various theories of prosodic phonology as well as testable hypotheses. The source text demonstrates the reasons why morpho-syntactic constituent cannot constitute the domains of application of certain phonological rules, thus yielding the need for constituents of the prosodic hierarchy.Due to the characteristics of academic works, featured by frequent use of terminologies, nominalizations and complex sentences, the translation of this book is proved to be a quite challenging job for translators who do not have relative knowledge of the special subject. In spite of various discussions on the translation of nominalization in scientific and legal texts nowadays, the exploration of that in academic texts is rather rare. Therefore, the author makes an attempt to conduct certain case analysis in terms of the translation of nominalization in an academic work in the hope of generalizing certain techniques that can be adopted to translate nominalization in different forms. This report consists of six chapters which are designed to describe the translation practice from the beginning to the end.Chapter 1 briefly describes the whole process of the translation, and gives an introduction to the source text, translation requirements and the structure of the report. The preparations made before translating and analysis conducted in the process of the translation such as characteristics of the book and major difficulties will be presented in Chapter 2 and 3 respectively. Then, the author will review the previous studies on nominalization abroad and at home from three aspects: definition, classification and function,so as to make a clear understanding about this prominent feature in languages. On the basis of observations in the last chapter, the translation of nominalization in the form of derivation, conversion, gerund, infinitive and clause will be illustrated in Chapter 5.Lastly,the topic of Chapter 6 would be the summary of what the translator has gained through the whole translation practice and the case analysis.
